In 2017, during its continuous research of languages collisions, Lucca Comics & Games realised the Graphic Novel Theatre, a project created by Emanuele Vietina and curated by Cristina Poccardi, who has selected and produced many theatrical adaptations of big Italian comic works.

This year, the challenge that brings the festival to step into the shoes of cultural and new contents producer is even more exciting as, for the first time, the work of an amazing international author will be brought on stage: Blankets,by Craig Thompson. A powerful and romantic autobiographical story, in which the development of complex family relationships intertwines with the birth of an extraordinary love, able to engage the readers and now also the audience that will attend this exclusive project.

The adaptation and the direction have been given to Francesco Niccolini, already a leading personality in Lucca thanks to graphic novels theatre Lucrezia Forever! and L’Oreste. The debut, scheduled for Wednesday the 1st of November at the Teatro del Giglio, will be accompanied by an exhibition of original tables, based on the work, in the foyer.

Rizzoli Lizard – that celebrates its first 30 years of activity – brings back to Lucca the real father of this seminal work: Craig Thompson. Author of Habibi and winner of two Eisner Awards and two Ignatz Awards, he will be back to Lucca, where he showcased Blankets 20 years ago. “The audience enthusiasm was overwhelming – recall Thomposon in the introduction of the new Italian edition – many long-lasting friendships were born there”.
