Jeffrey Catherine Jones: In a Sheltered Corner

Jeffrey Catherine Jones (10th January 1944 – 19th May 2011) was a U.S. Artist, mostly active from the late 60's to the early 2000s.

Jones created hundreds of covers for several books, especially fantasy, horror and science fiction. However, she was not just an illustrator and a painter, as she also worked on many horror comics, among which “Idyl” and “I’m Age”.

Between 1975 and 1979, along with Bernie Wrightson, Michael W. Kaluta and Barry Windosor-Smith, she rented a loft in New York where what it is now known as “The Studio” would see its daylight, a place in which some of the most important and iconic comics, illustrations and paintings of the corresponding genres have been created. Frank Frazetta has defined Jones as “the greatest living female painter”. In Lucca, in 1976, she received the prize as Best Artist of the Year for the comic series “Idyl”.

Although Jones became popular as Jeff Jones and thus lived most of her life as a man, after a treatment of hormone replacement therapy, she changed her name and she has been legally recognized as woman. Nonetheless, she decided to keep on using her original name to identify herself as an artist.

This fascinating character of the comic book world will be commemorated with a rich retrospective at Palazzo Ducale. Among the artworks that will be on display at the exhibition, we may mention “The Wall” (1977), a painting realised for a limited edition print and part of the book dedicated to some of the best works born from The Studio, a comic plate of the most famous series “Idyl” and the painting realised for the cover of the book “Nine Princes In Amber”.
